Tell me a little more about your show and what audiences can expect?

My show [Nobody Cares] is an autobiographical comedy show punctuated by original comedy songs co-written with Todd Almond. It is a self-deprecating romp through my life as a recovering people pleaser!

Can you talk about some of the creative team involved?

Todd Almond (who debuted his show I’m Almost There at last year’s Fringe) is my songwriting partner and creative collaborator. He has also been my dear friend for twenty years. Our director, Annie Tippel; our assistant director, Billie Aken-Tyers; and my producers Rachel Sussman, Jenny Gersten and general manager Heather Shields (Soto productions) are also pals which makes for a very joyful creative experience.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your work, both in terms of creation and performance?

My mother taught me to do my best to view the world through the lens of a sense of humour. Even in the darkest moments you can find something humorous. Becoming a mother has really put that to the test!

Do you tend to take inspiration from events happening in the world around you in terms of your work?

This show is more of an autobiographical nature although some of the themes are rooted in observational humour. So the show is inspired by my world, which I do think in many ways relates to the world at large.

How do you feel about the current arts landscape in your country and your part in it?

Whelp. This could be its own interview. Right now in the States our fundamental human rights are under attack which of course is felt within the arts as well. The hostile takeover of the Kennedy Center, being just one example. I feel so grateful and proud to be part of an artistic community that  stands for diversity, equality, inclusion, women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and the rights of immigrants and marginalised people.

How can Edinburgh audiences keep up with you beyond the festival?

You can follow me on instagram and TikTok at @laurabenanti. I’m not on “X” because, well…you know why.
