16 years since Frisky and Mannish’s first Fringe show, Laura Corcoran goes solo and is as Frisky as ever

Laura Corcoran is better known as Frisky, one half of musical comedy duo Frisky & Mannish. Corcoran is going solo for the first time, joking that her friend Mannish (Matthew Floyd Jones) “can’t be arsed with the leggings anymore”. Sixteen years after their Fringe debut show was a smash hit, Corcoran, with her pink corkscrew wig and silver sequin playsuit, is as Frisky as ever. There is zero jaded energy here, as the diva effortlessly belts out songs in a blues, rave or metal style, depending on what the audience requests.

You want a Shirley Bassey Bond ballad, mashed up with the Cheeky Girls? Done. Like a Virgin, the country version? Easy. The combination of her hyper-versatile pipes and the live band’s near-telepathic ability to follow wherever she’s leading them makes it easy for them to live-remix whatever they need. Although one of the four-piece band is too young (he’s 25) to remember The Thong Song, and one white-haired audience volunteer is well into his retirement, Corcoran leaves no one out. She’s got an impressive ability to morph into any genre and keeps the energy levels high. A smooth, nostalgic and surreal karaoke jukebox machine that remixes (and sometimes gleefully ruins) some of the audience’s favourite songs.
