In pub quiz-cum-theatre show Lucky Tonight! writer and performer Afreena Islam-Wright reflects upon her familial relationships – primarily between herself and her mother – and unpacks what it means to be Bangladeshi or British. Islam-Wright is unsparing in her open, insightful reflections on (un)belonging as a child of immigrant parents.

Undoubtedly, Islam-Wright is at her most charismatic as quizmaster – unscripted and unencumbered, she simply dazzles. Oftentimes, quiz answers subtly weave themselves into the narrative; other times, however, we’re left unsure as to the significance of a particular number or phrase. Whether attending Lucky Tonight! alone or in a group, Islam-Wright’s generosity of spirit is palpably reassuring. Recalling her own story, her performance rests more upon the surface, perhaps sacrificing some sincerity in an attempt to polish.

The show’s small details, nonetheless, offer comfort and ease. In front of Islam-Wright’s quizmaster desk, vibrant rugs lie across one another on the floor; such simple living room-like staging provides a warm welcome. Interludes of Bangladeshi music (alongside some early noughties British hits) pull us gently from scene to scene. With undeniable flair, Lucky Tonight! affirms Islam-Wright’s position as a true talent in the making – and it’s a privilege to witness her work in its early days.

Lucky Tonight!, Traverse Theatre, until 24 Aug (not 4, 11, 18), 9pm
