Review: Thor Stenhaug: One Night Stand Baby

Norwegian comedian Thor Stenhaug’s cheerful standup is a welcome dose of positivity

Naming your child after two top-tier Norse gods might seem likely to lump bizarrely unrealistic expectations on a poor unsuspecting newborn. But then Thor Odin Stenhaug was never really expected in the first place. As the title of this thoroughly entertaining show suggests, Stenhaug was the product of a brief encounter, on an army base. Which perhaps explains why he’s wearing a tank top tonight.

Actually that jolly wooly fjordwear helps with the traditional introductory section, where the cheery Norwegian flags up some key cultural differences now he’s living in London; lots of solid gags which often pay off again later. But then we’re onto the main thrust, and his impressively stoic mum is the hero of the hour.

Rather than cause a big Scandi scandal they make the best of it, and particularly creative use of some useful connections with a global delivery firm, when travel between the two parents becomes an issue. A rich source of material, this. Later, Stenhaug’s mum also offer the most upbeat spin on serious illness you may ever hear.

Choosing those epic forenames also offset the fact that Thor’s imminent arrival wasn’t initially joyful news, and there’s an overall theme of positive perseverance throughout. Which, right now, is definitely welcome.
