There are many different types of Islam, but Saaniya Abbas may be the first to proudly identify as “haram Islam,” acknowledging that everything she does is against Islamic teachings. It’s certainly a hook into a show based on the theme of hell. But, don’t worry, Abbas has done plenty of thinking about Jahannam (the Islamic term for hell) and is ready to share her learnings with the audience through her own personal life experiences – along with a hilarious David Attenborough impression.
As well as the main theme of sinful actions, Abbas delves into her own life, from going to an all-girls Roman Catholic high school in the Himalayas to marrying (and divorcing) a British man while living in Dubai. There’s even a bit about a curious person known only as “Human Footstool” on a dating app. One of the highlights of Hellarious is how easily Abbas is able to use timing to her advantage. Whether it’s a long pause for comedic effect or to build-up to a joke that leads to something in a completely different direction, there is no hesitation in what she is doing, including when interacting with members of the audience. Abbas is an incredibly talented comedian, and one can only hope to see more of her in the future.
Saaniya Abbas – Hellarious, Gilded Balloon Patter House, until 25 Aug, 8pm
