Darryl J Carrington’s non-verbal clown show serves up good, clean, interactive fun

A one-man tennis show is hallowed ground at the Fringe ever since Adam Riches hit big with Jimmy, his Jimmy Connors-inspired show, just a couple of years ago. Undeterred, Darryl J Carrington puts his own spin on things with Tennish (which, as one punter pointed out in the queue, should have been programmed at 10.05 to complement the show title, rather than bang on 10pm).

It’s a slightly bewildering time slot, not because of the missed opportunity or because it lacks any of the energy that such a time demands, but because it’s so wholesome in its approach that it could easily have been programmed as a mid-morning family show. This reviewer did, in fact, sit next to a couple of kids who were practically bent over laughing when their guardian was brought on stage to aid with the wordless, prop-based humour. No doubt the rare treat of a late excursion only added to their delirium.

Carrington does indeed have a kids show at the Fringe, Out of the Box, which returns after last year. And given the warmth and creativity Carrington displays as a performer, it’s easy to see why that show comes highly recommended.Tennish isn’t the fully-fledged mayhem that many will be seeking at such a time of night, and its benign nature could leave some wanting more, but it’s a breezy delight that’ll (forgive the golf metaphor) tee you up nicely for the night ahead.
