Stories are at the core of this many layered play by writer/performer Malaika Kegode. She’s onstage as our storyteller, stitching together many other stories told in myriad formats; journalism, folk song, Instagram Stories. A true crime podcast emerges when aspiring broadcaster Meles, the daughter of the principled journalist and politically engaged single mum, Dorothy Costas, stumbles on a local mystery. Dorothy is terminally ill, and this might be the chance for the professionally stuck Meles to show her mum she is capable of creating important work before its too late. She’s been treading water making naff podcasts and now’s her chance to get bolder.
Bridget Brock is a reclusive folk singer who may know something about the disappearance of a local musician who loved making field recordings of rivers and nature on his tapes. Could Bridget’s unusual badger collection hold any clues? It’s a folk tale woven around gorgeous live music performed by musical duo Jakabol inside a glowing cube. Live video feeds and voice filter effects over a microphone bring fresh, innovative spins on the storytelling. Even if not all the stories mesh smoothly, it feels like an inclusive call to creativity for everyone with stories to tell.
