We’ve had acid house, acid rock and acid jazz; is it time for acid gags? Tia Rey reckons so, although thankfully this show has a solid beginning, middle and end, rather than droning on repetitively for hours; the Fringe would definitely frown on that sort of overrun. No, the hotly-tipped Glaswegian is in punchy form here, while also mislaying several bits along the way – including the ending. And this isn’t the first time apparently. That’s due to ADHD, she suggests, rather than any residual mind-altering.
Rey isn’t the first comic to talk psychedelics – Simon Amstell wrote the best part of a book about it – but her tale is unique in being so bold, and for the consequences, which changed her life. In fact, this show briefly had one of the greatest final lines you’ll hear at the Fringe – until that reminder from her tech about the actual ending, which is fun too, if not so impactful.
It’s a great story though, and Rey is wonderfully charismatic, clearly earning a fervent following already, in Glasgow and beyond, and exuding confidence in the show’s quality. She’s got the follow up mapped out, too, by the sound of it. Definitely worth the trip.
Tia Rey: Oot Ma Banger, The Gilded Saloon, until 31 Aug (not 25), 9pm
